When you define the problem you face… your brain is freed to find solutions. So how do you begin to define a problem you’ve tried to solve for weeks or months? It’s often merely a matter of giving your brain a break from narrow mindedness or short sightedness….
Have you ever met a person who appears troubled but cannot get a
handle on why?
To define a problem at work is often to look at the dilemma from a few different angles. What do you think?
That may mean you listen to several people tell you their version, and then when people lay out the facts, ask for clarity to ensure you heard these correctly. It might be as simple as repeating back the main ideas from a problem’s definition offered, or it may mean bringing a group together for the purpose of laying out the issues in a way that addresses one precise issue. Be specific, and the brain projects a clearer image on the screens of your mind.
For example, you might define your firm’s problem as a drop in sales … because a similar company is stealing trade secrets and scooping customers. Stick to one issue, and you’ll find far more effective solutions.
