I always find something new and interesting over at Road Gladiator and today was no exception…. Melissa Petri wrote about the In-Flight
Magazines…in hopes they’d remain more than advertisements for travelers. I agreed with Melissa… but her story also pinged a pop-up in my brain... about an In-flight magazine, a terrorist, and an idea I hoped to share.
On a September flight from NY to Santiago, Chile...to lead a conference on the Brain’s Link to Business and Leadership Renewal, I was surprised to read a few of my brain-based renewal ideas quoted … in Hemispheres United Airline’s In-flight Magazine’s lead story. Their theme was education renewal and the writer used my ideas about how to get more capitol from teens’ brains….
Looking back…it wasn’t that big a deal… since lots of people were quoted in that 8-page-lead story… But that day… to spot my passion for the brain and for renewal ... all by surprise… seemed like a big deal…. Possibilities that could help teens attend brain friendly high schools still excite me… and so when the reporter called from Detroit I was thrilled to hear about others that saw change possibilities too.
On the plane to Chile … when I accidentally spotted the story… I interrupted the Chilean business leader next to me in a knee-jerk reaction…. And although this unsuspecting passenger seemed far more interested in his computer spread sheet … it was enough that he smiled and pointed politely to the title of my story…. That inflight magazine story carried a sense we could build together in a national and global way … and I felt proud to be a small part of the In-flight Magazine's bigger effort … to give back in ways that refresh broken systems….
Shortly after I returned from South America, the United Airlines lost a plane to terrorists … and I realized my prize story along with its hope-filled-incentives ... to help people… had been trapped on a terrorist controlled plane… that robbed life … stole dreams ... and terrorized passengers just like me….
Melissa, thanks for bringing that Inflight image back… because it’s no longer an merely a magazine strewn in debris ... projeced on screens in my mind… but it’s recycled into refreshing new ideas that raise again my desire to build together with people like you … and learn from many leaders I meet as I flip through In-flight pages … expecting new stories about hope and help for humanity ... simply because good initiatives still cross our broken worlds ….
