In brain based thinking opposing ideas are encouraged and supported,
as a way to open the gates for innovation. Recently, the MITA International Brain Based Center was called in to solve conflicts in a large business A team, and we encouraged the war-torn circle to "speak out both sides of their brains"…. To see what we meant, it's useful to look at their problem....
First, they promoted, Jack, a visionary who'd set up and led another Fortune 500 group... to reorganize their total quality control department.... Rather than share their own ideas, or support Jack's contributions, though... critics poked holes in his ideas at every meeting.
They defended their attack as “critical thinking,” ... and these old timers argued the firm could not afford time, finances or talent to hardwire any of Jack's changes…
When did critical thinking turn into attack…? Or have growth opportunities always invited more firing squads to kill creativity, rather than welcome collaborative thinkers who inspire winning outcomes?
A bit like Edward De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats, which tap into the efficiency of the brain, at MITA, we teach leaders to speak out of both sides of their brains….Did you ever land a richer deal because you supported complex ideas that people raised on both sides of issues ... at least until innovations fly from opposite angles…? Ever been cut off before the good stuff surfaces... all because an attacker keeps your best thinkers dodging darts .... rather than planting seed ideas that really work...?
To speak well out of both sides of your brain at any business meeting, you need only a good idea and the guts to get past firing squads that feel they have critical thinking skills on their side.... What do you think?
Check out the MITA survey leaders here use to help people solve problems that keep a good business alive and growing…. How do you and your colleagues get solutions?
