Know anybody at work who’s just plain …flat out… selfish…? Dr. David Sloan Wilson, and Dr. Elliott Sober… at the State University of New York in Binghamton … co-wrote Unto Others: The Evolution and
Psychology of Unselfish Behavior which shows why we can’t explain selfishness as part of a person’s root. Research on unselfish behavior …which is based on the study of both animals and humans … shows a striking number of different organisms that are programmed as "self-sacrificing."
Altruism it seems… comes more from a people’s view of good consequences for their group than from innate roots of goodness. Researchers admit that motives and emotions of unselfishness are unique to humans… and not seen in animals. Tell that to a dog or cat lover… and you’ll likely hear another take….
Unique to humans readers are told, there is a broad range of behavior between altruism and selfishness. We know that it helps to surround ourselves with those who are altruistic because the brain develops cognitive maps for what we do and these tend rub off from those who act altruistically. What do you think…?
