Ellen - I have to forward this to my mother tomorrow (Mother's Day) and thank her for always encouraging us to ask lots of questions!

Ann, in what ways did your mother encourage you to ask lots of questions? It would be fun to explore this.

Have you read Deborah Tannen's latest book, "You're Wearing That: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation?" It's amazing how many metamessages pass between mothers and daughters. From what you say here you give and receive very positive messages and that is indeed powerful!

I think the way she (and my Dad - not to give him a bum rap!) encouraged me to ask questions was by always answering question I had or pointing me in a direction to answer them myself. She didn't shut me down, tell me to go away because she was too busy, or EVER tell me a question I had was stupid or irrelevant.

I'll have to check out that book, I've never seen it before.

Ann, I had a phenomenal mother as well!

This book is so amazing that I already know you will enjoy it. Tannen helps us see areas we are not aware of!
