Differences between men and women at work come more from hormone levels and mixes than once thought.... Dr. James McBride Dabbs looked at
testosterone levels in more than eight thousand people ... and showed links between testosterone and behavior. Higher testosterone levels showed up in men and women who acted bolder…showed more focus… and appeared rambunctious. Interestingly most people fell into a middle range ….
In his book Heroes Rogues and Lovers: Testosterone and Behavior and Behavior, Dabbs showed higher testosterone levels in bald males... lean in physique ... and who come to work with a bent for action rather than contemplation…. That guy who others find a bit wild…the one who rarely smiles…. High testosterone causes men to die younger and pushes some to move from business to business…. Does that describe anybody you know…? Interestingly married men showed lower levels of testosterone ... single or divorced men who remarry fell into the middle… and divorced men showed higher levels....
Similar correlations showed up in women. High testosterone women spoke of extra-marital sex ... smiled less than low testosterone women ... and showed more presence along with a stronger handshake.
The image of soup shows why we struggle to meet some men or women at work half way…. I'd be interested to see who we tend to hire first here ... and to read more about ... who remains loyal to a vision longest.... What do you think…?
We do know that high testosterone levels can work in people’s favor when it helps them to land deals in tense moments… while competitors give up in the heat…. The hormones works against others who pop the competitor in the eye for making a smart remark… Still the brain has yet to yield top secrets when it comes to hormones that benefit business…. According to Dabbs … that’s because the brain is “more like a soup than a computer… Its nerve cells float in a broth of supporting tissue, plasma, blood cells, nutrients, oxygen, hormones, neurotransmitters, and waste products….”
