We’ve come a long way since Erma Bombeck said “anybody who watches three games of football in a row should be declared brain
dead…” Springer Science + Business Media put out a press release on May 19th to show how limitations in the brain’s visual system hinders goalkeepers from predicting free kicks…
In the words of the press release: “Professional goalkeepers fail to stop free kicks because of shortcomings in their visual system, according to new research by Cathy Craig and colleagues, from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland. The projected trajectory of a ball following a curved flight path is more difficult to judge because our visual system is not sensitive enough to gauge a change of direction at speed, mid-flight.”
It seems to me that if football players use erroneous judgments about whether the free kick will end up in their goal or not, we too may lack accurate predictions that effect a business trajectory. Think the workers past experiences would compensate for these shortcomings in visual perception? Not so… in football players anyway…. So much for a lifetime of wisdom for all it’s worth….
