Have you ever felt that nothing can go wrong …? Have you experienced that rush at work ... when ideas and excellence come to as naturally as a mighty water fall cascades into pools… and the boss praises your
results…?
Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, spent a lifetime observing those rare moments ...flow ... when a person is completely at ease on the peaks… You see it in a speaker's humor... or in an artist’s brush... or in an Olympian’s race…. Flow appears to move you without thought, and people who experience it ... seem unaware of time.
Has that ever happened to you...?
In Dr. Csikszentmihalyi's studies ... people’s watches would sound randomly timed beeps ... upon which they would jot down what exactly they were doing... record their level of concentration...estimate their happiness...and show other variables.
What did Dr. Csikszentmihalyi learn that could increase flow ...and maybe even land a promotion for you…? People, he concluded, should seek out tasks that absorb their passion, offer challenge, and not push them too far beyond their capabilities.
He questioned why we keep on doing things we don't like to do." The flow experience, Dr. Csikszentmihalyi clarifies, is not happiness, because the experience of happiness would itself distract from the total absorption of the flow. Yet a life in which the flow experience is common will tend to be a happier life. In his books Dr. Csikszentmihalyi tells how he found flow and how these events shaped his success… Check out Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience and Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement with Everyday Life.
