Your attitude has more to do with the brain's ability to learn new skills... than you
think.... No question... some develop better skills earlier in life than others, but the adult brain is far more malleable than once thought.... so wherever you are now ... and whatever skills you need ... can also help you to become an effective learner.... It's rarely easy though...and you can't always expect help from busy peers.
Take new technology skills.... For two weeks now I've been trying to learn how to get a blog to ping and trackback ...capabilities I am told will increase traffic with ease .... I may know little about this, and the internet sends me to buttons on Movable Type that were removed from my Movable Type page... but I do know this.... With the right attitude we learn a great deal more from facts and from one another.
Skilled peers who do well at work ...are often no brighter than you... but they are likely better prepared mentally to grab onto a new skill... and they stay on track when barriers hit. I like to call it a mental calm.
A mentally calm state helped me to look for possibilities about "pings" and "trackbacks" beyond problems and frustrations of stress that comes from a week of lost work while I tried a gazillion wrong moves to add these to my site.... If not careful...when you learn new skills... you will make the mistake of working against your serotonin ... that chemical the brain needs to run well, and to sustain your well-being, even when pings or trackbacks refuse to come to your screen.
Einstein put it this way: I am not that smart but I stay with problems longer than most people.
What do you think? Do you approach new skills with quiet brain where Serotonin is adequate, and so you are able to learn. Or do you let frustration create the opposite of serotonin...which is cortisol ....and which works against you? Writers too will agree that these chemicals can actually bring you great ideas ... or they can shut down your muse, and cause your writing to be labored and anything but inspired.
That’s just how the brain works .... By the way... do you know how to ping or trackback on a blog...?
