Have you ever encountered a person Online who silences other gifted workers, simply by words they post, or how they respond to problems? ![]()
Since tone is the online body language that allows you to know and be known, you’d be interested to know that your brain can work in your favor here too.
High activity arousals in the brain, caused by certain chemical and electrical mixes, will influence what and how we post Online. The first step to rebooting the brain for better tone, is awareness… Signals to watch for include sweaty palms, a racing heart, easily distracted, or fluttering sensations. Brain activity is governed by chemicals in the brain stem. These hormones change at different times of the day or night, through changes in emotion or illness, and as a result of how we react to problems. What you think and how you react to your world sends signals up to the large regions of cortex to moderate and control the interactions of many circuits of brain cells. It’s likely best to avoid posting when you sense strong negative reactions…. What do you think?
In the next post we’ll look at specific practices that enable you to set a mental stage for tone that interacts well with all views present in any circle. I like to think of Online interactions as a sort of fireside chat where opportunities exist to investigate new ideas through safe and yet challenging go-arounds. It's a place where people know and are known for their unique mental insights!
To build good tone together online, is to create such positive communities across differences. Good tone works to elicit new ideas... it enables peers to review facts ... and it often results in revolutionary ways to change broken systems. Tone is really about rewiring the brain with an eye for new opportunities by tapping into talents in any group.
What advice would you give to people Online, who stir anger, cynicism or sarcasm that works against building solutions or getting optimum results?
