I first met Karen Ammond, president of
KBC Media Relations, about 12 years ago after talking to her mother, former NJ State
Back then Karen was busier than most leaders I’ve met, and already highly successful.... When I called last week to set up an interview for BrainBasedBusiness.com, she was just heading off to
How would you describe the best of what you do in one brief sentence?
Karen: Clients call and I listen carefully to their ideas and inventions … and then I simply help the media to know who they are…I like to ponder the world around them and whenever I can, I visualize that person on the cover of NY Times or Wall St Journal … then I start a campaign. I don’t run a traditional PR agency… We mold the idea – it’s a psychology of understanding not only what the media is looking for but what the people themselves want.. Initially, the clients often do not know what they want …. so I do what I call a media splash – and that makes people stop and think…
How do you see into others’ lives to help them move forward?
Karen: It’s basically a study of the person – I like to see how their brains work… and hear how their speech works… by looking at the whole person. I look for what they can offer society and then I try to pull that offering out of them… I have a very successful client, for instance, who found himself recently in a divorce… and now we have helped him to shape a new book about something other than his research… about relationships and developing who you are as a person…
What motivates you to do what you do so well for others you believe in?
Karen: A passion for life – and a passion for helping and supporting others to be successful… that’s what I love. My passion for helping others become who they can be, has little to do with the dollar amount. The motivator is taking the story and molding it and grooming it and the next thing you know we are on the Today Show. To me that is amazing…
How would you advise people to advance their own situations?
Karen: Remove any fears. What holds people back is their fear of failure. Not all my campaigns work and yet I keep going till I hear a, “Yes.” Determination is also a big factor. People who believe in their message are ready to go out and garner more information to enable themselves to represent that cause… I tell people to attach themselves to a national campaign… do something good for the world – and “you will find yourself branding your own name.” Major TV shows want a great story and that will never change… We simply break these stories in KBC media splash stories, and that’s how our clients get calls from all over the world…
What is the main hurdle you face?
Karen: A lot of expectations in what I can do with my career. Sometimes people expect to be on an Oprah Show tomorrow – and not everybody I handle will land across the world in the news. I have extremely high goals for myself… and for my clients… but I cannot get all clients on Larry King….only because there is not a fit.
How do you overcome that hurdle?
Karen: I try to step backwards and re-evaluate and then come up with a new concept that enables clients to fit into the marketplace in another way. It’s also about when you face a hurdle you respond in unique ways to create a winning situation – some clients come with needs. When I take on new people there has to be a bond with the person. I do “out of the box publicity.” Between clients and I... we backtrack and I try to get into their brains and try to change the directions with them…into more doable goals. Sometimes what we end up with is far from what we start with…and often it is better because we work together to get the best. When people do things altruistically they discover they are doing something good for the world, that comes back as a good for themselves. It’s really quite amazing…
The media really looks for the story that is different… and so it is important to get my clients’ unique ideas out – and it’s also important to protect yourself from the tabloids. By getting coached and doing media well, people can open up whole new worlds for themselves and many learn to go in new directions in the process.
Thanks Karen, no wonder you stay so busy and have been so successful!
Karen’s life and work illumines another angle of the new definition of intelligence -- to which many gurus in my field ascribe. Check out her current work on an after school documentary... and see how Karen solves problems by using multiple intelligences in unique ways… At KBC Media Relations, she creates world class winning projects from the ordinary stuff of people’s lives. Many who come to Karen gain media exposure that even celebrities only dream of. In a term she often uses about why she blitzes certain stories to the world, Karen reminded me that “It’s all about improving the planet...” Seems the perfect time to showcase Karen Ammond’s remarkable intelligences in operation- for the same reason – to improve the planet!

Karen, said, "By getting coached and doing media well, people can open up whole new worlds for themselves and many learn to go in new directions in the process."
Karen, what was your most surprising or remarkable story of "metamorphosis?" I'd love to hear more!!
