Whenever leaders articulate and value opposite viewpoints on controversial topics, without value judgments or recrimination, they stretch a group's intelligences. That’s because facts that support both sides of a discussion shed light on new angles. If opposing points of view shape the best outcomes, that seems to be reason enough to hold back blame and accusations – which tend to squash alternatives…. Are opposites articulated without reproach where you work? We’ve all encountered narcissistic leaders at times who demand their views alone should reign, and yet, luckily I've worked mainly with generous givers.... leaders who motivate more finances and friends by drawing in and engaging diverse viewpoints….Let’s face it --opposites are out there for those who look…
One brief example comes to mind -- as my Rochester newspaper still sports several full page tributes to Robert Wegman, who died last week at 87… Even Wegman’s major competitor, Top’s Grocery Chain owner, expressed appreciation in a full page tribute for this leader magnate. A common tribute shared how Mr. Wegman built a great business mostly by enabling others….Tyco executives, on the other hand, became known for stealing from those they pretended to serve.
Opposites need not be a good-bad situation though… and opposing views might be simply that… two alternative perspectives -- given one or equal value. Let’s say you discuss the fact that employees are paid fairly – while others say they are not…Or you might give evidence to show that a firm’s current business practices erode their community... while another person claims that current company approaches actually challenge people to reach higher and to unify teams …
It may be two debatable sides related to healthcare ... which seems fair to some people at work…while others show details about unfair healthcare practices…Or equity may be evident at work to some…and yet blatantly missing to others you talk to…Or senior workers may be seen as more productive by some workers…while others favor younger employees who bring new technologies. ….
Would you agree that opposite viewpoints might develop more intelligences at work? If so how can these be encouraged in settings without blame…? Thoughts?
