We all have them… those times when one view or opinion prevents us from seeing the other side. It’s worth another look though, because to see the opposite side is often to see a thing better….
Leaders who view the whole picture before making an informed decision, and who take time to weigh facts on both sides, for instance, tend to get better results. Snap judgments, in contrast, come to those who defend one side and fail to engage the other fairly. This week I’ve been thinking about leaders who identify and deal with their perceptual blocks, and who value opposing views. Do you know any?
While a person’s initial reactions often come from belief systems, successful leaders take steps past their personal opinions to consider opposing views… They read more, listen with an open mind and value differences… Popular leaders such as the late Robert Wegman talk to employees daily to interact with others’ views on just about.... Changed an idea of yours about anything lately...?
To operate with fewer perceptual blocks is to think critically and to probe more information before making decisions or stating final views. If age influences some leaders to make quick decisions, based on a lifetime way of thinking, rather than weighing opposite views first, what renews a person, in your opinion?
Every day, leaders face many different personalities, beliefs, cultures, and approaches, and daily they have a new chance to weigh facts and reconsider best options on an issue. I’ve found that the best ideas often spring up from those around us, and yet we miss hearing the other side when we allow personal opinion to block a wider perception.
If you’ve been held back by perceptual blocks, why no try a new approach today…. Any one new thing you learned through listening with a new desire to really hear and think on the other side of your opinions…?
